Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW BIG IS A MINI AUSSIE? A TOY? A STANDARD?

Mini Aussies are 14-17 inches measured from the top of their shoulder or withers to the floor. Some registries will accept them up to 18 inches. Toys are 13 inches and smaller. However, some registries consider a toy to be 14 inches and under. Most consider Standards starting 18 inches and up.

HOW DO AUSSIES GET ALONG WITH CHILDREN AND OTHER PETS?

Aussies are great with children and are wonderful family pets. They are also accepting of other animals in the household. You could come home one day and find your Aussie cuddled up with your kitty cat!

DO AUSSIES NEED TRAINING?

Yes. All puppies in any breed need to be trained with consistency and love. Aussies love to be involved in family activities and do best with owners that provide obedience training, socialization, and exercise. Aussies are naturally reserved around strangers and need to be properly socialized early in their lives.  They are also extremely loyal dogs and want to be with their human family members as much as possible. Aussies are extremely smart and thrive to please their owner by learning a training concept with very few repititions.

ARE AUSSIES REGISTERED WITH THE AKC?   WHAT IS THE PROCESS?

The AKC has recently added Mini Aussies to their registry under the name "Miniature American Shepherd". Also, stanards are registered with AKC. AKC, however, does not recognize toy Aussies.

I register my dogs through the ASDR (American Stock Dog Registry). However, if you would like to pursue registry with the NSDR (National Stock Dog Registry), then you can always hardship them. They will not have papers with pedigrees, but they will with ASDR.

DO YOU SELL YOUR PUPPIES WITH PAPERS?

Yes, all of my puppies come with full ASDR registration papers. Also, an additional fee of $250 will be added for breeding rights.

DO YOU SHIP YOUR PUPPIES?

I prefer not to ship my puppies on airlines but, if they are shipped they will be shipped with a chaperone. Due to recent USDA law changes there must be a face to face meeting when shipping a dog. You may also pick them up or I will meet you half way for a fee.

HOW MUCH IS THE COST OF SHIPPING?

Shipping is at the cost of buyer. This price includes airline ticket for chaperone, airline charges, crate, vet check, health certificate and certificate of acclimation. I don't charge mileage for going to the vet or driving to the airport.

ARE THESE COSTS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF THE PUPPY?

No. All shipping and delievering fees are the responsibility of the buyer.

I WANT TO PURCHASE A PUPPY FROM YOU - WHAT DO I DO NEXT?

It's simple. Send me a deposit for $250.00 and let me know which one you want. A deposit is required to hold a puppy. Please get the deposit to me within one week.

HOW DO I SEND YOU THE DEPOSIT?

For the deposits I accept cash, checks, paypal or money orders. For the final payment, I accept cash only(no money orders, paypal or checks). Make any checks out to Colorado Mini and Toy Aussies.

IF I DECIDE THAT I DON'T WANT A PUPPY ANYMORE. MAY I GET MY DEPOSIT BACK?

All money is non-refundable. I know that sounds really strict but your deposit is for us to HOLD your puppy. We mark it as sold so nobody else can purchase him/her.  We have taken that puppy off the market FOR YOU. We are a small breeder and the benefit for you is that your puppy is born and handled daily in our home and comes to you very well socialized. We would be loosing several potential sales while your puppy was marked as SOLD.

DOES MY PUPPY COME WITH A HEALTH GUARANTEE?

Yes, a 72 hour health guarantee. Refer to my Contract Page here. We stand behind our dogs, but every situation is different and it's impossible to address every potential scenario in a contract. If there is ever a problem, it can and will be dealt with professionally where we both can be happy. Our goal here at Colorado Mini and Toy Aussies is for everyone who gets a puppy from us to be totally excited with their new family member!

WHEN DOES MY PUPPY NEED TO BE PAID IN FULL?

Puppies must be paid in full by six weeks.

HOW EARLY CAN I PICK MY PUPPY UP?

Puppies can be picked up in person after they have their eight week shots. All airlines require that puppies be eight weeks old to ship. Please pick your puppy up or have us ship him/her out by nine weeks of age.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED IN CASE I WANT TO PICK UP MY PUPPY?

Fountain, Colorado. 15 minutes south of Colorado Springs. Further away? Hour and a half from Denver and two hours north of Raton, NM.

ARE THERE THINGS I SHOULD NOT DO WHEN I PICK UP MY PUPPY?

The main thing to remember -- be very careful in public places until your puppy has received all their vaccinations!  For example, when you pick up your puppy be careful taking them to any pet store or park. You don't want to expose your new little bundle of joy to getting sick by where other sick puppies have been. Wait until you can get somewhere your puppy can safely potty --preferably a place where dogs haven't been. The same is true when you are out on the high-way with your puppy.  Rest stops have designated dog areas. That is fine when your dog is fully vaccinated but don't let your puppy potty there because of all the non-vaccinated and sick puppies.  Please find an isolated spot on the side of the road for potty time ~ and always have the puppy on a leash! In an instant they can dart away from your protection simply because they are so curious and energetic.

I THOUGHT MY PUPPY HAD SHOTS BEFORE IT WAS SHIPPED.  WHY IS IT STILL SO DANGEROUS TO TAKE HIM OR HER TO PETS MART OR THE PARK?

Your puppy will be up to date on its shots according to his/her age when it is delivered to you. I will send a shot and worming record to you when the puppy is picked up or shipped out. However, the Parvo virus is still very dangerous to your puppy and still can be contracted after several sets of shots. Most vaccination schedules don't have your puppy complete with their vaccinations until it is 15-16 weeks of age. So, the best policy to keep your puppy healthy is to wait until all the boosters and vaccinations have been administered.

HELPFUL DEFINITIONS

SHOW QUALITY- when a dog has the correct conformation according to registries, such as the ASDR, as well as correct coat markings, then said dog can compete against dogs of the same breed in order to find the best representation of that breed and is therefore referred to as "show quality."

PET QUALITY- Colorado Mini and Toy Aussies who have a little too much white on their coat or have a slight underbite or whatever small variation from the breed standard~~aren't able to go and show against other Aussies BUT they still have the personality of a champion and still have purebred papers!!!

BREEDING RIGHTS- when a puppy/dog is registered with a purebred registry, the breeder of that puppy/dog has to indicate whether the puppy/dog should be allowed to have its progeny become registered with a purebred registry. A puppy/dog which is purchased from Colorado Mini and Toy Aussies WITH breeding rights will be sold for a higher price. Additional cost is $250.00.
